Macrodosing: the basics.

Welcome back to Truffle Talk.

In this edition, we’re going to explore macrodosing, the practice of taking large doses of psychedelics.

  • What is a macrodose?

  • How to prepare for a macrodose

  • How to choose a trip supervisor

What is a macrodose?

Macrodosing is the practice of taking a large dose of mushrooms.

This dose produces a psychedelic experience, or ‘trip’, which lasts 5-6 hours, and is usually an intense and emotional experience.

Psychedelic trips can be very meaningful. A trip can reframe your perspective on life, relationships, and personal challenges. And this usually results in long-term improvements in wellbeing.

How to prepare for a macrodose:

There are two things you should prepare to maximise the chance of having a positive psychedelic experience; your mindset, and your environment.

In the world of psychedelics, this is called your ‘set and setting’.

To prepare your mental state (set):

  • Clear your schedule and your to-do list for the day of the trip, and ideally the day after.

    • You may feel very sensitive the day after your experience, so it’s best not to have any major commitments.

  • Remember the psychedelic mantra; TLO. Trust, Let go, and be Open to whatever the experience presents.

    • The less resistance you feel, the more likely you are to have a positive experience.

  • Practice box breathing. There’s a good tool for this at the bottom of our website, at noetic.bio/info.

    • Box breathing is a great way to manage anxiety during the come-up, and at any time during your experience.

To prepare your physical environment (setting):

  • Choose a safe, comfortable, and familiar place to have your experience.

    • Your bedroom is normally a good choice.

  • Clean your room!

    • This is one of the most important things you can do to improve your psychedelic experience.

  • Put your phone on airplane mode, or turn it off, for the full duration of your trip.

    • You don’t want unexpected notifications influencing the direction of your trip.

  • Bonus: Have some blankets available.

    • People often like to wrap themselves up for comfort during the peak of a psychedelic experience.

How to choose a trip supervisor:

If you’re taking a very large dose of mushrooms (>3g dried mushrooms, or >15g truffles), then you should choose a sober friend to supervise you.

This is the kind of friend you want to supervise you:

  • You fully trust them

    • This is the most important thing. In order to TLO, you need to feel 100% comfortable with the person supervising you.

  • Patient

    • You may repeat things, forget things, or imagine things that do not really exist. Your trip supervisor must be OK with this, and avoid showing any signs of frustration or annoyance.

  • Has previous psychedelic experience

    • People with previous psychedelic experience are generally much more understanding of the unusual thoughts and emotions that can occur during a psychedelic experience.
